How it works

The same three steps, whichever you choose.

You decide after each step. Nothing beyond the first look is committed up front.

01

We look

Four to six weeks

We spend time on site with the people who do the work. It is a look at how the business actually runs, not a questionnaire.

02

We report

In writing

You get our findings and a plan. Then you decide what happens next. That decision is yours.

03

We helpOptional

A set period, with an end date

If you want it, one of us works in the business on set days to put the plan into practice, then hands it back.

Step 1

What we look at

Six areas, each one scored, so you can see where the business stands and track how it moves. Everything we see and hear stays confidential.

01
People and decisionsWho makes which calls, and the authority they have to make them.
02
The weekly routineThe meetings, measures and habits that keep the business on course.
03
How the work gets doneThe key jobs, and how much of that is written down.
04
Customers and suppliersHow the business is spread across them, and who holds those relationships.
05
The numbersWhat the reporting shows, how quickly, and whether an outsider could rely on it.
06
Know-howWhere the knowledge sits today, and how it is shared.

Step 2

What you get

  • Where the business stands todayEach of the six areas scored.
  • What is working, and what we would fix firstIn plain language, in order.
  • How a buyer would see itWorked out with you, using your own figures.
  • A plan with timing and costTake it and run with it, or ask us to help.

Why it matters

Buyers pay for profit they believe will continue.

Two businesses with the same profit can sell for very different prices. The difference is how confident a buyer is that the profit carries on after the change.

Annual profit$750,000
Valued at 6 × profit$4,500,000
Valued at 4.5 × profit$3,375,000
Difference$1,125,000

An example to show how it works, not a valuation. We do not value businesses; your accountant or advisor sets those figures.

Step 3 · Optional

Hands-on help to carry out the plan.

Typically about twelve months, with the end date agreed at the start.

  • 01One of us in the business on set days
  • 02A monthly progress report
  • 03A steady weekly routine
  • 04Managers given real authority
  • 05Key processes written down
  • 06Progress re-checked every three months
